How it Works
Forty of our best-performed Lifesavers are invited to be part of a committed, highly trained team that ensures the highest standards of lifesaving. This team guarantees five skilled Lifesavers on every patrol day, who are trained to cope with every rescue situation and to pass patrol inspections with ease.
Each patrol is supplemented by other lifesavers who apply to the Patrol Captain to join the patrol for the day.
The objective is to provide the highest standard of Lifesaving. The strategy creates within the Club, a core team of outstanding Lifesavers who enjoy a special status and provide incentive for others to enhance their own skills and commitment to lifesaving to gain selection to that team.
This system improves the standard of Patrols at our Club and at the same time, gives greater flexibility for you to complete your patrols on days that fit in to your own schedule.
Structure of Patrols
40 members, in 8 Patrols of 5 Lifesavers each.
Surf Rescue Team (SRT) Lifesavers are volunteers.
Each SRT Lifesaver commits to do all rostered hours or to provide a suitably qualified Substitute.
SRT Lifesavers are expected to gain ROC, ARC and IRB awards.
The SRT Patrol provides the core 5 Lifesavers for every patrol day.
Selection for Surf Rescue Team
Volunteers for Patrol Captain are invited from a group selected by the Club Captain and Vice Captain.
Volunteers for SRT are invited from members selected by the above two and the Patrol Captains, based on patrol hours last year and patrol performance.
If insufficient volunteers, additional members are offered the chance to volunteer.
Where possible, Patrol Captains select their Patrol members.
Patrol Vice Captains are selected by Patrol Captains.
Members not selected for SRT, form the Supplementary List.
Supplementary List
Patrolling members not selected for SRT, form the Supplementary List.
Supplementary List may patrol on any day they choose, provided they book with the Patrol Captain.
The Patrol Captain may refuse any request, based on past performance of the member.
A maximum of 7 Supplementary List members may book to join a patrol on any day, giving a maximum Patrol size of 12.
On a Saturday patrol, Supplementary List members must do the full patrol, including set up and pack up.
On a full day patrol, Supplementary List members must do at least first half, including set up, or last half, including pack up.
Supplementary List must do at least 16 hours patrol for the season.
Supplementary List must do at least 4 hours on a scheduled Working Bee, including John Marshall Day.
Penalties
Supplementary List members who arrive late for patrol hours they have booked, will not be allowed to join the Patrol.
Supplementary List members who fail to show for patrol hours they have booked, must explain to the Disciplinary Committee.
The Disciplinary Committee will comprise the Club Captain and Vice Captain, one Patrol Captain and other senior member. It is not intended to impose extra patrols as a punishment as the intent of this system is to have patrolling seen as a privilege.
Anyone failing to do the required patrol hours without good reason, will be ineligible for SRT the next season.
Anyone failing to do the required patrol hours, must explain to the Disciplinary Committee.
Competitors must do at least 16 hours patrol prior to 1 January. If not, they may not compete until the hours are completed through the defined system.
